Why Machinery Moving Isn't Just a Bigger Truck
People underestimate machinery moving because the truck is the visible part. The truck is the easy part.
The weight is concentrated. A three-tonne machine is not three tonnes spread across a room like furniture. It is three tonnes standing on four small feet, which is a completely different problem for a floor, a forklift, and a set of slings.
The balance is rarely where it looks. Machines are dense in odd places - a motor at one end, a heavy bed at the base, a light housing on top. Rig a machine as though its centre of gravity is in the middle and it will tip when it leaves the ground.
It is attached to the building. Bolted to a foundation, wired into three-phase power, plumbed into compressed air, hydraulics, water, or extraction. None of that can simply be pulled off.
It may not fit through the door. Machines are often installed before a building is finished, or through openings that no longer exist. Establishing how the machine actually gets out is a genuine question that has to be answered before anything else.
It has to work afterwards. This is what really separates machinery moving from ordinary heavy lifting. A sofa either arrives or it does not. A machine can arrive apparently intact and still be useless because it is a millimetre out of level or its alignment has shifted.
And the clock is running. Every hour the machine is down costs you. That pressure is exactly what causes people to skip the survey and improvise the lift - which is how machines get dropped.

What We Move
Machinery moving in Kenya covers a wide range of assets. The common thread is that they are heavy, valuable, and difficult to replace.
Industrial and manufacturing machinery. Production and processing plant of all kinds - CNC machines, lathes, presses, injection moulding machines, packaging lines, mixers, compressors, chillers, and conveyor systems. These are the core of machinery moving: heavy, bolted down, serviced, and often precision-dependent.
Generators. Gensets are dense, awkward, and usually sited somewhere deliberately inconvenient - a rooftop, a basement, a plant room with a single narrow door. Generator moving is as much about access as weight.
ATMs. Bank ATM moving is its own discipline: heavy, high-value, security-sensitive, and usually located in a public banking hall or a through-the-wall installation. It needs to be done securely, and often outside banking hours.
Safes and vaults. Some of the densest objects anyone will ask you to move, frequently on upper floors, and with obvious security requirements. Safe moving is a floor loading question before it is a lifting question.
Medical equipment. Scanners, imaging equipment, sterilisers, and laboratory instruments - heavy, extremely sensitive, and almost always OEM-calibrated. Medical equipment moving is usually a job where the manufacturer's engineer handles commissioning and our partners handle everything up to that point.
Printing presses. Large, heavy, modular, and precision-aligned. Printing press moving typically means partial dismantling, careful rigging, and methodical reassembly and alignment.
Workshop and plant equipment. Lifts, hoists, welding plant, air compressors, and general workshop machinery.

It Starts With a Survey - Always
This is the part most machinery moving pages skip, and it is the part that decides whether the move works. Nothing should be quoted, scheduled, or promised before a survey, because until someone has looked at the machine and the route, nobody honestly knows what the job requires.
The Machine
The survey establishes the facts you cannot guess: the machine's actual weight (not the brochure weight - the weight with the tooling, fluids, and base still attached), its dimensions, its centre of gravity, and its designated lifting points.
That last one matters more than people realise. Machines have specific points designed to take their weight, usually documented by the manufacturer. Rigging to a convenient-looking casting instead of a designated point is how machines get damaged - the housing tears, the frame distorts, or the load shifts mid-lift. A proper survey finds the manufacturer's lifting points before anyone puts a sling anywhere.
Can the Floor Take It?
Floor loading is the question that stops machinery moves, and it is almost never asked by people who are not in this trade.
A machine's weight sitting on four feet is a point load. The floor under the machine has held it for years, but the floor along the route it has to travel may never have carried anything heavier than a pallet truck. Add a forklift carrying the machine, and you have the machine's weight plus the machine that is carrying it, concentrated on a few wheels, moving across a slab or a suspended floor that was never designed for it.
On upper floors this is a structural question with a real answer, not a judgement call. The survey establishes whether the route can carry the load, and where it cannot, the plan changes - spreading the load with steel plates or mats, taking a different route, or lifting externally instead.
The Route - In, Out, and Between
The survey walks the whole route in both buildings and in between: doorway and corridor widths, turning circles, ceiling and door heights, ramp gradients, lift capacity and internal lift dimensions if one is being used, and whether there is space to bring a crane or a truck close enough to matter.
This is where a machinery move most often turns out to be a different job than expected. The machine that was installed before the wall went up now has to leave through a window opening, or over a roof, or via a temporary opening that has to be made and reinstated. Better to discover that at survey than with a five-tonne machine halfway across a workshop.
The Destination and the Transport Route
The survey covers the destination too - is the new position prepared, is the foundation ready, are the services there - and the road route between them, which determines whether the load is a standard transport job or an abnormal load requiring permits.
Decommissioning & Recommissioning
Half of a machinery move happens before the machine is lifted and after it is set down. How much of that InMover's partners handle depends on the machine, and it is scoped at survey.
Taking It Out of Service
Decommissioning means safely disconnecting a machine from everything holding it in place. Typically: isolating and disconnecting electrical supply (properly isolated and locked off, not just switched off), disconnecting compressed air, hydraulics, water, gas or extraction, draining fluids where required, removing or securing loose tooling and moving parts, and unbolting the machine from its foundation.
Some machines also need partial dismantling to travel - a press or a large printing machine may come apart into modules that can physically leave the building and fit on a truck. That dismantling has to be documented as it happens, so reassembly is not archaeology.
Putting It Back
At the destination the process runs in reverse: positioning the machine precisely, levelling it, bolting it down or grouting it in, reconnecting services, and reassembling anything that came apart.
Levelling is not a detail. Precision machinery that is not level within its tolerance will produce out-of-spec work, wear unevenly, or refuse to run at all. A machine can arrive without a scratch and still be useless until it is properly set.
Where the OEM Comes In - An Honest Answer
Here is something worth being straight about, because a lot of machinery moving pages are not.
For many machines - particularly precision, medical, and OEM-supported equipment - final commissioning and calibration must be carried out by the manufacturer's own engineer. Not because a mover could not physically do it, but because the manufacturer's sign-off is what preserves your warranty, your calibration certification, and in regulated environments your compliance.
So on those jobs the honest scope is: our partners survey, decommission, rig, transport, position and level the machine, and work around the OEM engineer's schedule so they can commission it. Anyone promising to fully recommission and recalibrate your OEM-supported CNC or medical scanner as a standard part of a moving quote is either subcontracting the OEM anyway, or telling you what you want to hear.

Rigging & Lifting - How Machines Actually Move
Rigging is the craft of moving something too heavy to carry, using the right method for the space you have. It is not one technique - it is choosing among several based on what the survey found.
Machine skates and rollers. For moving heavy machines across a floor, skates take the weight and let a machine be walked across a workshop with control. It is slow and precise, which is exactly what you want with a machine and a wall in the same room.
Jacking. Getting a machine up off its feet so skates can go under it, or setting it down onto its new mounts, is done with jacks - lifting incrementally and evenly, keeping the machine level as it rises, because a machine lifted unevenly is a machine that tips.
Gantries. Where a crane cannot reach - inside a building, in a low-ceilinged plant room - a portable gantry provides a lifting point directly above the machine. Gantries are how machines get lifted in spaces a crane will never see.
Chain hoists and spreader beams. Hoists provide controlled lifting; spreader beams keep sling angles correct and stop a lift squeezing or distorting a machine's frame. Sling angle is not cosmetic - bad angles multiply the force on lifting points and on the machine itself.
Forklifts and cranes. For loading and for external lifts, the right machine for the weight and the reach - a mobile crane where a machine has to come out over a roof or through an upper-floor opening, a forklift where the ground and the load allow it. Crane selection is a calculation, not a preference.
Certified lifting gear. Slings, shackles, chains and beams are rated equipment that requires inspection and certification. Kenya's occupational safety framework places obligations on the examination of lifting equipment, and a rigging partner should be able to produce current certification for the gear on your site. If they cannot, that tells you something.
Which combination is right for your machine comes out of the survey. That is the whole point of surveying first.
Transport & Abnormal Loads
Once a machine is out of the building it still has to travel, and heavy machinery moving frequently means transport that is not routine.
The right truck. Machinery transport commonly needs a hydraulic tail lift, a low-bed or step-deck trailer for tall machines that would otherwise exceed height limits, or a flat-bed with the load properly secured and its weight distributed across the axles.
Securing the load. Machines are secured with rated lashings to designated points, with the load restrained against movement in every direction. A machine that shifts in transit is a danger to everyone on the road, and to itself.
Abnormal loads. This is the one nobody warns you about. Where a load exceeds the standard limits for weight, width, height or length, it becomes an abnormal load and requires permits from the relevant road authorities before it can travel. Depending on the load, that can also mean escort vehicles, prescribed routes, and restrictions on the times of day the load may move - often overnight.
Whether your machine crosses those thresholds is established at survey, along with the route it will travel. The thresholds and permit requirements are set by the authorities and change, so they are confirmed for each move rather than assumed. Route planning. For a genuinely large load, the route is planned rather than driven - bridge clearances, weight limits, roundabouts, and overhead lines all decide the road you take.
Safety, Method Statements & Compliance
On a machinery move, safety is not a paragraph in a proposal. It is the plan.
The method statement. Before a machine moves, there should be a written method statement - what will be moved, in what sequence, using what equipment and technique, by whom, with what lifting gear, and what the exclusion zones are. It is the document that turns "we'll figure it out" into an actual plan, and it is what your own safety officer will want to see.
The risk assessment. Alongside it, a documented assessment of what could go wrong and what controls are in place: load failure, tipping, crush points, floor collapse, electrical risk, working at height. Identified, rated, controlled.
Lockout / tagout. Before anyone works on a machine, its energy sources are isolated and locked off so it cannot be re-energised while someone is inside it. Switched off is not isolated.
Exclusion zones. Nobody stands under a suspended load, and the area around a lift is controlled. This is basic and it is non-negotiable.
Competent people and certified gear. The crew should be trained for the work, wearing appropriate PPE, and using lifting equipment with current inspection certification.
Employer obligations. Kenya's occupational safety and health framework places duties on employers regarding safe systems of work, the examination of lifting equipment, and the safety of people on site. A machinery move happening in your premises is happening under your roof - which is a good reason to use partners who work to a documented method rather than improvising.
Ask for the method statement. If a machinery mover cannot produce one, they are not planning your move - they are turning up and hoping. On an asset worth millions, that is not a risk worth taking to save a few shillings.
Minimising Downtime
For most clients, the machinery move is not the cost. The downtime is the cost.
The honest framing is not zero downtime - it is planned, minimal, predictable downtime. A machine that is bolted down, wired in, and levelled to a tolerance cannot be moved without stopping, and anyone promising otherwise is not being straight with you.
What actually reduces downtime:
Move when you are not running. Weekends, nights, shutdown periods, and planned maintenance windows. Machinery moves are routinely done outside production hours precisely because that is what the asset's owner needs.
Phase it. Where a plant has several machines, they do not all have to move at once. Sequencing the move so part of the line keeps running while another part relocates is often the difference between a slow week and a stopped month.
Have the destination ready first. The single biggest avoidable cause of extended downtime is a machine arriving somewhere that is not ready for it - foundation not poured, power not run, air not plumbed. The machine then sits, doing nothing, in a new building instead of the old one. The survey covers the destination for exactly this reason.
Be realistic about commissioning. Reinstallation and commissioning take the time they take, particularly where an OEM engineer is involved and has their own schedule. Building that into the plan is what makes a timeline honest rather than optimistic.

The machine itself. Weight, dimensions, and how much it has to be dismantled to travel.
